The Junior Chamber of Commerce of Montreal (JCCM) enters a new era as the presidency gives way to The Collective of ambassadors and spokespersons. Composed of four diverse profiles, The Collective becomes the voice of the priorities of the young business community and the organization's committed stances. Explore the profiles of these Ambassadors and how they embody the message "Change happens through you".
With a background in science, Nathon Kong initially focuses on cancer research and patient care before transitioning to the pharmaceutical industry. "I've always wanted to make a difference, one way or another," he shares. Eager to challenge himself professionally, he founded his own design company, La Maison Nathon Kong, specializing in creating bespoke suits that convey the stories of Montreal artists through art and technology and soon, living spaces. "At the start of my entrepreneurial journey, it is one of the greatest challenges that I will either succeed or fail, but I'll have no one else to blame but myself."
He joins the JCCM as his business begins to experience increasing success, and has been an active member for over 7 years now. Nathon's creations are showcased at art festivals throughout North America and on the international stage. He garners entrepreneurial awards at both the local and national levels and is invited to share his insights on the global stage at TED conferences. In 2018, Nathon is selected to exhibit his work alongside the renowned fashion designer Thierry Mugler at Canada's largest art museum.
Over-consumption is one of Nathon's primary concerns, particularly in an industry where fast fashion prevails. "When you wear something, I want you to understand where it came from. And hopefully, if you appreciate it, you will keep it for a long time, just like an heirloom. It's not a short-lived fashion piece that's been produced in a hurry to end up in landfills a few months from now."
The patterns on the interior fabric of the suits and accessories are designed by artists dealing with mental health issues, and 10% of the proceeds are donated to the Les Impatients foundation, which supports individuals with mental health problems through artistic expression. "You can pursue your passion while making a positive difference in society and achieving long-term business success."
Nathon shares his delight in using his role as a member of The Collective to serve. "It is an honor to be nominated, and it's my privilege to accept." During his tenure, Nathon aims to listen to what's important to JCCM's members and be a voice for others.
Having been a part of the JCCM since 2016, he has witnessed five presidencies transition, and now it's his turn to carry the torch alongside three other ambassadors and spokespersons. Nathon values his role within The Collective because it places emphasis on the collective purpose rather than individual interests. He considers himself fortunate that "three other ambassadors have incredible stories that differ from mine, but together we can support and inspire one another to further the youth’s priorities."
For him, representation is crucial. "I am neither Francophone nor Anglophone. My origins are Thai, but I grew up in India. When I was accepted through the immigration process in Quebec, I created my own opportunities and never took anything for granted. I hope people will see that someone with humble beginnings can have just as much potential to contribute to society and make their dreams come true."
Taking a committed stand
Nathon emphasizes the importance of the JCCM taking an active stance towards change. He believes in not being complacent with the status quo and encourages continuous improvement and impact.
Gone are the days when one had to be at a certain stage of their life to embody positive leadership. Nathon recognizes the energy and determination of today's youth to drive change, regardless of their age or title.
